This Week’s CNN Featured Hero Is A Filipino

CNN is searching the globe for people whose selflessness, dedication and achievement are as inspiring as the CNN heroes they honored in 2008. This week’s CNN featured hero is a 28 year old Filipino – Efren Peñaflorida Jr.
Ef started a teen group that brings education to kids living in the slums. Their flagship project called Kariton Klasrum, Klinik at Kantin (K4); recreates a school setting in unconventional locations such as the cemetery, city trash dump, slum corners and alleys using a pushcart loaded with books and other educational items. Children ranging from ages 2 to 14 flocks every Saturday to learn reading, writing, arithmetic and English from Ef and his trained teen volunteers.
He hopes to expand the pushcart project to other areas, giving more children the chance to learn and stay out of gangs.
“I always tell my volunteers that you are the change that you dream and I am the change that I dream. And collectively we are the change that this world needs to be.”

I truly admire this young man. He has never tried to catch any attention to himself over the past 12 years. He never left this country to be productive abroad. He chose to stay and uplift young souls and train them to become productive leaders. How heroic is that?
Efren and his team are true inspirations. Efren Penaflorida is an epitome of the real Filipino, brave, noble, serviceable and a true statesman unlike those in power.
All Filipinos salute you Sir… all the world is inspired of the greatness of your race and spirit.. the brown race… the Filipino spirit!
