The World Awaits Again

Oscar “The Golden Boy” De La Hoya and Floyd Mayweather Jr. are two among the boxing giants whose names will definitely ring a bell even to non-boxing fans. Their May 2007 fight at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada was a certified box office hit beating the financial record of the Lennox Lewis-Mike Tyson bout.
With De La Hoya losing his WBC light middleweight championship belt by a split decision to Mayweather; and a record earnings of $134.4 million in pay-per-view revenue and $18.4 million in live gate, you cannot but expect that a sequel will definitely follow.
The world awaits again as Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer announces that he expects the rematch to occur on September 2008 with the 13th or 20th as their target dates. The match is most likely to be held at the 27,000-seat Home Depot Center but the MGM Grand Arena can also be considered. Although final date and fight venue details are still undetermined, the sequel to boxing history’s richest fight is said to be already a done deal.
Skeptics doubts if this fight will manage to approach the numbers of the original but one thing is for sure, the Mayweather/De La Hoya tickets will definitely sell well.
Hold your breath and get ready to rumble.
