American Idol Season 7’s Top 7 Sings Mariah Carey

A lot of people watching American Idol were shocked when Michael Johns was voted off last week. Others were even offended with the way Ryan Seacrest announced it. I really think someone else should have gone instead of him. It was a shame that he was voted off after a good performance.

Anyway, tonight was all about Mariah Carey songs as she was the guest vocal coach of the episode. With her five octave range and chart topping songs, singing her songs will be a challenge everyone must overcome. Here’s what I think of tonight’s performances:

Let me keep my comment on David Archuleta sweet and simple since I have nothing new to say about him: He sang “When You Believe.”

Carly Smithson did a powerful interpretation of the song “Without You” but something is missing. I just don’t know what.

Syesha Mercado singing “Vanishing” brought the spotlight to her vocals. Though I am not familiar with the song, I think it was a good interpretation.

Brooke White stripped off the glory from the song “Hero“. I thought it was a boring performance. It was too dragging and a little disturbing.

I have to admit that Kristy Lee Cook is indeed improving. However, I am still not sure that her improvement merits her a spot in the competition. She sang “Forever“.

I think David Cook was the only one tonight who managed to pull off a Mariah Carey song after turning “Always Be My Baby” into something new.

I am not familiar with the song “I Don’t Wanna Cry” and so I do not know how much did Jason Castro changed it to suit his style. Regardless, it would probably leave no lasting impression to me.

Forecast: I’ve been saying for the past weeks that it was Kristy Lee’s time to go but I was always proven wrong. So for this week, I’m voting off Brooke White.
