Something To Be Thankful For

November 12, 2007 · Print This Article

Dad had a stroke around two months ago. I am only writing about it now since we didn’t want words to reach my sister then who just recently flew abroad. Missing home and worrying about it can be too much to handle.

Dad took a nap for his afternoon siesta and when he woke up, he said that he had trouble slipping on his sandals and he felt that his left arm was weak. He didn’t informed mom about it. She only noticed that he was talking like drunk and that his left cheek was sagging. She then knew that he had a stroke.

A visit to the doctor, an ECG, a 2D echo, and costly medicines helped dad to somehow recover. However, he has to work for a change in lifestyle, meaning zero cigarettes and minimal drinking. It was hard for him at first but I think that he had already passed the withdrawal stage.

Dad is now able to do his usual routine. I guess the incident was God’s way of reminding him to take care of his health. By December, we will be returning to his doctor for a follow up check up. The realistic in me hopes not for the best as the doctor said that his condition is irreversible, but the hopeful in me prays that things will be for the better.

If you could, please mention our family in your prayers.

done kapatid, done! basta sisilip-silipin mo papa mo ha…ganyan nangyari sa papa ko…hindi sa ayaw nila sabihin sa kasam-bahay, kundi hindi rin nila naiintindihan nangyayari after an attack, kasi brain is telling them everything’s fine pero ayaw sumunod ng katawan
alaga lang ng gamot at pysical therapy…

Good to know that your dad is doing better now after his episode. I am realistic as well but also a believer in the reality of the Miracle of complete healing.

I will definitely include you, your family and especially your dad in my prayers.

I echoe on Rebecca. I can’t imagine what you and your family are going through.

Feeling ill may be a part of us, but it’s not a part of who we ARE. I believe that the people we dearly love needs more than just telling them to take pills - they are worthy of love, friendship, and support. Most of us feel more alive when we challenge ourselves to be a part of something unique. So just spend more of your time with your Dad/family than you normally would. Always keep your finger’s crossed and hope for the best.

    I’m sharing my prayers.

    K,

thanks. not much damage done in our family naman as of now except for the additional expenses for the medicine. the doctor was actually suggesting for an operation pero sana madaan pa din sa gamot.

My prayers will indeed be with your family. I, too, had strokes 2 and 1 1/2 years ago; I’m 26, and they’re quite curious. I have no idea what caused them. I enjoy reading your blog. Keep on writing!

Indeed, it is something to be THANKFUL for! I will remember your family in my prayers.

My Aunt has a heart condition din due to diabetes. Kaya I can so relate to how you feel about having a sick loved one.

Alalayan mo lang lagi Dad mo, Ron. Watch what he eats, pero huwag ka magpahalata. Kasi minsan nai-stress sila kapag laging nakabantay hehe. Meds lagi sa tamang schedule.

  19. iRonnie on November 18th, 2007 1:33 am

    GIGI,

maraming salamat sa panalangin. i do hope your aunt maintains a good condition din. enjoy your weekend!
